"Slate" - Nested Plywood Table

This table was selected as a finalist for the juried student gallery at the 2004 International Woodworking Fair ‘Design Emphasis’ competition.

The aim for this piece is to make the most from the least. Utilizing one 4x8 sheet of Baltic Birch plywood, computer-aided design and CNC technology is used to create this low-waste panel table. Excess material from the inside planes of the table provides for the legs. This table is designed to compare and contrast old-world craft and the latest in high-tech. The “cut slate” effect was created by taking a precise geometric pattern and proportions, and randomizing the pieces for a staggered appearance. The pattern of the legs, holes, and engravings are intended to reflect each other, yet become independent details. 18Hx19.5Wx42L
